Geographer – The Fire is Coming

The fire is coming again
The ice, it covers my head
I try to talk, but it burns at my lips
It knows all of the hiding places where I live
It knows all the excuses that I have to give

The night is for lovers and friends
And I put myself right in
Covered in roses that prick at my skin
I invite you to play, I invite you to win
I invite you to take from me all that’s shining

I’m looking out that long tunnel light
I can see my reflection in the stars, in the sky
I could leave you for heaven, I could leave you tonight
But we always believed what we saw with our eyes
And the colors, they keep on falling into mine

Oh, the sirens’ call
Their song so warm and light
Below their feet we lie

My voice sounds hollow and thin
I’ve grown tired of the way I pretend
So dress me in fabrics that sparkle and shine
Because the lights, they went out in the tunnel tonight
And the stories you tell sound like birds when they fly

the cure – play

Here’s my February mid-afternoon gloomy melodramatic indulgence.  This b-side track boasts typical cure chiming guitars, bleak minor-keyboards and bleaker lyrics.  Oooh, I feel like a teenager again! This should have made an album.

Day after day, I let you down
Promise you to change, then change my mind
And every time I promise you It will all be fine
It won’t be like this next time

The days you wait, turn into years
Always wait – Helpless tears, hopeless nights
And all the fears, it will always be like this

You give me everything you have
Hoping it will someday be enough
To melt my heart – To make me fall in love

Day after day, I let you down
Promise you to change it all
Then change my mind
And every time I promise you, soon be fine
It won’t be like this next time

But tonight we play, I think, the final act
I push too hard and you crack
Walk away – Don’t look back
This time you’ve really gone

You give me everything you have
Knowing it can never be enough
My heart’s too old, too hard, too cold for your love

Casket Girls – Ashes and Embers

Enigmatic Savannah sisters, Casket Girls chant their jaded lyrics sweetly through a buzz-saw wash of woozy guitars on Ashes and Embers, from their True Love Kills the Fairy Tale.  The song is set to a video montage of scenes from the Breakfast Club film, quite effectively.  This is my gloomy snow-storm guilty pleasure of the day.  Well, that and a bottle of wine… 😉

Waiting for the evening star
Waiting for the hand to move
Sitting here beside myself
touching something blue
Isn’t it a waste of time
pretending there’s a reason to
play the part of someone who
isn’t you

Isn’t it strange how it happened so slowly
Isn’t it strange how it happened so fast
Doesn’t it seem like you’re living in a movie
up until the moment
but it never lasts
Holding my breath
I can breathe underwater
Closing my eyes
I can see in the dark
Isn’t it strange
when you walk away easy
Ashes and embers
Ashes and embers

Like a planetary ring
Like a magnet and metal pull
It’s the gravity of everything
beautiful
It’s the sound of a Sunday choir
Its the serpent in a sea of green
It’s the burning of a city fire
It’s the ripping of a seam

Isn’t it strange how it happened so slowly
Isn’t it strange how it happened so fast
Doesn’t it seem like you’re living in a movie
up until the moment
but it never lasts
Holding my breath
I can breathe underwater
Closing my eyes
I can see in the dark
Isn’t it strange
when you walk away easy
Ashes and embers
Ashes and embers

the first snowfall

snowfall-3

I will find sanctuary
in December’s first snowfall
and it’s ivory spread

paralyzed
while the frosty feathers
smother your every footprint
and rid the earth of their pervasive scent

winter’s gracious  flurry
will suffocate each aching autumn memory
In sweeping blankets of bleach

snow-globe

He upset the globe

yet, the lovers endured
in proud romantic pose

sheltered by the frenzy
of the simulated storm.

certain he could sever
the jeer of their embrace

the ornament was hoisted
for one more violent shake.

The National – 90-Mile Water Wall

A somber track from Brooklyn’s, The National.  The melody hints at the ghost of Cash and the strings break hearts.  Stunning.

Well I know that you know
That you’ve become the target of this hand
With never even asking
Well I know that you know
That you’re the only thing that I can stand

So how could your hair
Have the nerve to dance around like that, blowing?
And how could the air
Have the nerve to blow your hair around like that?

I’m waiting for a ninety-mile water wall
To take me out of your view
I’m looking for a trap door trigger
To drop me out of your view

Yes I’m listening, I’m listening
I can tell that you are serious
Your looking for that hurt look around my mouth
The look of a steep fall
Yeah that’s how Hersey put it

So you can make another claim
Well go ahead and make it
So you can make another claim
Well go ahead and make it

I’m just waiting for a ninety-mile water wall
To take me out of your view
I’m praying for a trap door trigger

I’m just waiting for a ninety-mile water wall
To take me out of your view
I’m praying for a trap door trigger

Yes I’m listening
I can tell you’re serious

Pinback – Penelope

This is a simmering indie pop song by now defunct San Diego duo,  Pinback. Its seductive bassline and chiming strum are hypnotically set against an odd vocal chirp.  I believe that the song is about a dying fish? Band member, Rob Crow also has several solo albums under his own name and his more recent incarnation of Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place. If you like this, check out these other songs, “sender”, “loro”, “soaked”, “Syracuse”, “good to sea”, “sediment”, “tres”, “bloods on fire”, “bbtone”

Oh, Penelope
Are you filled with air?
Swallowed oxygen that make you float up?

Is it dropsy?
Where your lungs swell?
It’s depressing me to see you struggle.

Oh, Penelope
Are you filled with air?
Swallowed oxygen that make you float up?

Is it dropsy?
Where your lungs swell?
It’s depressing me to see you struggle.

I’m treading water with my oars
Glass galleons anchored, ocean’s floor
I’m diving down with all my gear
In search of treasure, para me corazon

Take you to the forest.
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your red scales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shell

Don’t want to see you floating upside down
On the top of the bowl when I come around to visit you

Don’t want to see you floating upside down
No, girl
Need you there
Need you there
Need you there
Release that air

I’m treading water with my oars ( Release that air )
Glass galleons anchored, ocean’s floor
I’m diving down with all my gear ( Release that air )
In search of treasure, para me corazon

Take you to the forest.
Let you feel the raindrops falling down
Seeping through your red scales
Eliminate the faucet
Eliminate the need for water
Replace it with a safe shell

If they summon the rains now
Are you gonna rise?

If they summon the rains now
Are you gonna rise?
